Our district has been selected to participate in the landmark Clean Elections process.
Clean Elections aim is to rid the political process of special interest money and allow more diverse citizens the opportunity to run for elected office. The 14th Legislative district was selected by a bi-partisan panel to participate in this new program.
What does this mean?
The goal of the Clean Elections project is to even the playing field for candidates running for office. A "Fair and Clean" candidate has agreed to forego special interest money and raise between 400 and 800 contributions of $10 each from people within their district. Once a candidate receives at least 400 contributions, she qualifies to receive public funding. Both sides have an opportunity to receive the same amount of public funding as long as they raise the required matching funds.
The Clean Elections Project even allows for additional funding in the event an opposing candidate receives any help that is not paid for by their own candidate committee. The goal is to make sure the race is equally funded. If either candidate violates the clean elections requirements, the candidate's Clean Election status will be revoked, any public funding will have to be returned and the candidate will no longer be allowed to run as a Clean Elections Candidate.
